crying, lying, fire, and ashes
...my own sanity. “CAROLINA CANTÈ, REPORT TO THE FRONT OFFICE, THAT’S CAROLINA CANTÈ.” the PA boomed. Arei snickered. “Shut it, Arei.” I mutter as I step out of the classroom. My boyfriend, Josef, shoots me a concerned look as I pass him. My best friend Europa smiles in pity. Gosh, I hate when she does that. And Eribel, that “One Girl”, just stares blankly. In the office, my mother is waiting. She is filling out a form saying:
Carolina Claire Armaada Cantè is given permission to exit Ho-Zao Academy for the day, on January 19th, 2021. Time 2:31 p.m., and her signature is added at the bottom, “Zelia Dalena Cantè“
“Mum, what’s going on?” I ask, as Mum hands the slip To Ms. Shardaban, the secretary. “I’m so sorry, Dalena.” Ms. S whispers. “Oh, Alayda, don’t be.” Mum smiles back. “Caro, you need to get home. Now.” Josef is called, but he’s followed by Arei, and Europa and Bel. My mom looks at me like it’s the last time she’ll see me before the ground falls out from under me and my classmates. All I can hear is my own screaming drowned in the sea of Josef, Ari, and Bel’s. Somehow, Europa is keeping her calm.
We hit the ground with a mighty THUD, and I’m on my back. I roll over to see Bel rubbing hers. “Ooh, ow.” She mutters. Europa landed on a couch. Josef, Arei, Bel, and I are looking at her in wonder when an official-looking man walks in. “Eribel McCline.”
He and Bel exit the room, Bel with a nervous expression. Josef is taken next, then Europa. I sit as far away from Arei as possible. But he’s called. “Carolina Cantè.” An identical-to-the-last-four man asks.
I feel mental. This is so banned, I think, that you can just take five teenagers to a warehouse-basement-whatever-it-is place. I’m in a room with Josef and Arei on either side of me. On Josef’s left sits Europa, and on Arei’s right, I can see Bel. “What the—what is happening?” Bel skips a word, not saying a thing in the empty space. “I—“ I skip a word as well. “Don’t know.” “Hi, welcome to...ah, forget it. I’ll need your full names.” The man has entered. “Carolina Cantè.” I state before my friends can. “Middle?” “Carolina Claire Armaada Cantè.”
”Josef Amelius Clarke.” “Areiel Damon Stelenna.” ”Eribel Jone McCline.” “Europa Io Jupiter,” Euro has a Jupiter-y name, doesn’t she?
“Well, Jupiter. We’ll pork on that,” Mr. Whatshisname groans. I do too. What does that mean? “What the—what is happening?” Bel practically repeats this, tone and everything. “We’ll See, McCline, we’ll see. We’ll start with Ms. Cantè.” I let out a little gasp as two more identical men grab my arms firmly. One of them clamps a gloved hand over my mouth and nose. It smells sickeningly sweet. Before I know it, I‘m out cold. Even in my state, I swear I could feel my ankle being bound. Somehow.
Do you like my *horrible, pointless* series?
How did Carolina feel it happen?
where are they?
who is the man?
What is happening?
like my strange names?
