American Girl Packing Peanuts May Contain Wheat

Just a warning to all of the American Girl fans with Celiac disease: American Girl packing peanuts from online orders may contain wheat. AG has been notified of this, but I just wanted to let all of you guys know that! If you want to order packages from American Girl without packing peanuts, call them and ask for no packing peanuts.

I have Celiac so thanks for posting this! I got so sick when I got Gabriella so now it's good to know why I did. I'm glad there are so many biodegradable options now but it sucks because almost all of them are made from wheat and don't have any warnings. I've gotten sick from some straws and plates because some of those are made of wheat now too, so I'm thankful I know to avoid packing peanuts as well. But AG should definitely put a warning label.

btw the packing peanuts are biodegradable. put them in the sink and pour hot water on them and they dissolve. it's kinda cool to watch. i didn't know they might have wheat in them but you can dump them out of the box without touching them. I had saved them once to reuse at my old house before I knew I could dissolve them and mice nibbled on them 😱

Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. Gluten is left everywhere after even a tiny thing left inside. Think "microdust". Even oats to be gluten-free have to be certified - there has to be no wheat or anything like that grown anywhere near the field even. It's airborne, the same as fish when you're allergic. I have celiac disease and trust me - even without touching the peanuts, just the box itself after, I would get sick and be in crazy amount of pain for about 3 days (for some people with light/mild case of allergies it could be fine though). The dissolving part is awesome, it looks cool and reduces trash. I would recommend it to anyone who can use…

packing peanuts are annoying. I try my best to get all in the trash with one attempt, because I have a dog and 2 cats in the house. Did not think about allergy in humans either. Thank you for the post. :)

Don't throw them in the trash! They're meant to be dissolved in hot water. Take the boxes and catalog out, throw packing peanuts into sink/bathtub, check again if you haven't missed anything in the box and pour some water. No need to waste trash bags and it's fun to watch. PS. If any of your pets isn't sensitive to wheat, it shouldn't cause any harm to them as well. It's worth monitoring of course, but you don't have to be really stressed out by that. Google out the contents of the peanuts nowadays and ask your vet to be sure, but that's what my friend was told by her vet few years ago. I'm not sure if it still applies.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have a severe wheat allergy to anything wheat and that includes by touch. I am NOT Celiac, this is confirmed through DNA and antigen tests, but I am confirmed in a different DNA group that is also allergic to gluten. Celiac is only one subset of gluten allergies/intolerances, but has gotten almost all the attention. In many ways, I am even more sensitive than Celiac. So thanks again for the heads up.

I mean Celiac rips your body apart but okay sure it's alright for you to hate on an autoimmune disease that is fatal to 10 to 30% of people suffering from it...I get that you're really sensitive to gluten but that doesn't mean it's okay to act like Celiac isn't important.

That is definitely good to warn people about! I never had Celiac Disease, but I'm personally OK with the packing peanuts. I like the fact that if you don't want packing peanuts in the shipping boxes, you can just call them and tell them 'No packing peanuts'. As soon as I take everything out of the box, I just dump them all in the trash. Some of the packing peanuts will occasionally fall in the floor because there are so many of them. LOL!! If they fall in the floor, all I do is pick them up and drop them into the trash. I bet tons of people are relieved that they can now ask for no packing peanuts.

They're meant to be dissolved in water. No need to waste trash bags. I'm really surprised that people don't know about it. That's a bonus that came out of this post, now we can pass the knowledge😉. It's pretty fun to watch and less hassle, my friend always does that. I would always order packing peanuts, if it wasn't for celiac disease.
