Yesterday, as many of you AGDN readers know, astronomer Lucianne Walkowicz sued American Girl and accused them of stealing her likeness for the Luciana Vega doll. A representative for American Girl released this statement regarding the lawsuit:
"American Girl takes great pride in creating original characters for girls. We take any allegations to the contrary extremely seriously, and intend to defend the case vigorously. As it is our policy not to comment on pending litigation, we can’t comment further."
I had American Girl dolls from the very beginning- back when they were from the Pleasant Company. I also have an 8 year old daughter, and I have bought her dozens of products from your company.
The concept of this doll was blatantly stolen from a woman who is HUGE for girls in STEM. Look it up before commenting. Do better. You could have contacted her and maybe had a partnership that would be beneficial for girls beyond monetary gain. I'm beyond disappointed, and how you handle this will certaintly influence my decision to purchase anything from American Girl in the future.
If they had retired Luciana on Dec 31, 2018 like they should have, this wouldn’t be an issue. If they insist on having these dolls out for over 2 years, then the term Girl of the Year needs to be replaced as it doesn’t mean anything anymore and the dolls are not nearly as special as they were back in 2016 and prior.
You guys, it's Mattel! They win period. This little person has no proof, & will not have the money or the lawyers to fight a giant corporation.
i hope ag wins the case! :D
I think they should settle this out of court. I genuinely don't see them winning. But who's to say?
