New American Girl Live Musical in Sugar Land, Texas This October

This October, Inspiration Stage, a local theater company in Sugar Land, Texas, just outside of Houston, is hosting an American Girl musical that will be playing for two weekends in October, from October 2 to October 11.

"THE AMERICAN GIRL MUSICAL — Synopsis

Emma and Juniper have been best friends since they were six, when their mothers — lifelong best friends themselves — passed down their childhood American Girl dolls and started a tradition: every year, the girls write a wish on a paper leaf and hang it on the Dream Tree painted on Emma's bedroom wall. Over the years, through joy and loss (including the death of Emma's mother), the tree becomes the keeper of their friendship.

Now fourteen, on the eve of high school, Juniper finally tells Emma what she's been hiding all summer: she's gotten into a prestigious performing arts school a thousand miles away, in Michigan. Emma feels blindsided and abandoned; Juniper feels unsupported and ready to grow up and move on. The fight fractures their friendship — and when Juniper refuses to hang her wish on the tree, tearing it in half instead, the bedroom collapses around them.

Emma, Juniper, and Emma's chaotic older brother Dutch wake up inside Pleasantland — the imaginary world the girls built through years of play, now populated by Samantha, Kirsten, Addy, Kit, Melody, Julie, and Josefina, fully realized as people. The Dream Tree is shedding its leaves rapidly, and the dolls realize that if the last leaf falls, Pleasantland — and they — will cease to exist. Samantha rallies the dolls into action: they split up, sending some after Juniper and some after Emma, to help save the girls' friendship before time runs out.

As Emma and Juniper journey separately through each doll's world — Julie's lesson about loyalty and dreaming big, Kirsten's reminder to find joy even far from home, Melody's story about finding the courage to use her voice, Josefina's gentle guidance through grief for Emma's mother, and Addy's hard-won wisdom that you can't choose your beginning but you can choose how your story ends — both girls come to understand their own role in the rupture, and what they're really afraid of losing.

Reunited at the Dream Tree, Emma and Juniper watch the last leaf fall — Emma's very first wish, "I wish we'll be best friends." With it gone, Dutch declares game over, but Juniper refuses to accept the ending as written. She pulls out her own first wish from her pocket — the leaf she tore in half rather than hang it the night their friendship broke. With tape from Dutch's blistered fingers, she repairs it. Emma returns her wish to the tree; Juniper adds hers beside it: "Forever." As they reprise "Make a Wish," the Dream Tree blooms back to life, and the three are pulled back to Emma's bedroom, waking up as if from a dream.

The musical closes years later, as Juniper performs her senior thesis song with Emma by her side — proof that the friendship didn't end, it grew up alongside them.
