We probably won't be getting any more Historical Characters for a while.
Why, you may ask? Well, American Girl usually likes to release these kinds of characters in threes. Three new worlds, and then they slow down for a few years, usually two to three.
In 2015, 2016, and 2017, we got Maryellen, Melody, and Nanea. And then we got no new historicals in 2018 and 2019 before we got Courtney in 2020.
In 2009, 2011, and 2012, we got Rebecca, Cecile + Marie-Grace, and Caroline. And then we got no new characters in 2013 and 2014 before Maryellen debuted in 2015.
The pattern would have been the same if Julie's release wasn't delayed to focus on best friend dolls and movies. But Kit in 2000, Kaya in 2002, Julie in the-mid 2000s, and then another delay.
You get where I'm going? We just got Courtney in 2020, Claudie in 2022, and now Isabel and Nicki in 2023. The cycle has just completed, and we're probably not getting any historicals in 2024 or 2025 because of that.
So expect your next historical doll in 2026.
Weren't the Hoffman twins like a bridge into the Girl of the Year and Contemporary Characters too...We should be getting more historical years like 1784 and 1834 maybe, as well as more diverse characters other than World By Us, Corinne and Kavi, as well as more Native/First Nations characters after Kaya too, but again, who knows...
I don't personally know any other eras AG could do besides the Gilded Age and Pre-colonial eras. A lot of the other eras were covered already. They are probably better off expanding on the dolls they do have. Especially because the way they are going about history has been slapped together and not really taking the time to develop stories that educate about history. It would probably be a few more years before releasing a 2000s or 2010s. We'll see, though.
ugh i don't want to wait that long!
I hope they will spend the time re-releasing certain older historical characters and collections as limited edition. That would be so cool!
I'm curious if they will do a big re-release of Felicity in 2026 because it will be the 250th anniversary of the founding of the US. I'm also hoping they release the pieces of the original six so I can complete my collection from my childhood now that I have disposable income. :)
