Addy Author Connie Porter Speaks Out About Modern Doll Box Art

The recent release of the Modern Era Historical collection has brought some controversy in the American Girl fandom, most notably due to the box art on the modern Addy doll, which depicts a tobacco field. This is clearly wrong, and this is unacceptable.

In the comments section of a fan's post, Connie Porter, who wrote Addy's books, shared her thoughts on the matter, and spoke out against why this is wrong.

"You better preach, girl! I had the same reaction when I saw the tobacco field as a background. Who did American Girl run this by? I had thought American Girl/Mattel would have had someone sitting at the table who picked up on what it meant to have the modern character still in the tobacco field. When it came to the development of Addy, Pleasant Company made sure that there was meaningful representation of her stories, the doll and the products. It did so by hiring an advisory board of African American professionals and literally had them at the boardroom table. No matter what some may say, not only does representation matter, but representation that is informed, intentional and has the power to shape policy and product matters even more."

I couldn't have said it any better, Connie. Do better, American Girl.

@Admin I per-ordered all of the new Modern Era dolls. Five have come. Addy has not with a notice that her ship date will be i June. I wondered if, given the negative comments, the box art was being redone. The doll's boxes look like books which is cool.

I loved reading this interview with Connie Porter — it’s so refreshing to see thoughtful insight on modern doll box art and how it connects with creativity and storytelling. As a longtime fan of Addy, it’s great to understand the artistic intentions behind the visuals we grew up with.

On a fun, self‑care note, whenever I take breaks from my own creative projects (like customizing doll displays!), I reach for KZ Soap to refresh and reset — it’s a little ritual that helps me stay relaxed and inspired.

Thank you for Gruha Lakshmi Yojana and Janani Suraksha Yojana, which provide both economic and healthcare support. Empowering women financially while ensuring safe pregnancy services shows a balanced welfare approach. Mothers feel safer choosing medical facilities, and households gain financial strength. These initiatives bring positive change at the grassroots level. Appreciation for focusing on dignity, safety, and long-term social progress.

A couple of seasons ago I realized most of my bad decisions happened when I was rushing between tabs on my laptop, so switching to mobile felt like a reset, and somewhere early in that shift I decided to download the app for free just to keep everything in one place. What changed wasn’t just convenience, it was discipline. On the phone I’m less likely to overanalyze or stack random bets out of boredom. I usually prep before kickoff, pick one or two angles, then log in only when I’m ready to act. The live interface runs smoothly, which matters when momentum flips fast and hesitation costs value. One thing that helped me long term is setting a fixed session…

It's the cover of the original Meet Addy book. All of the dolls have the background of their original Meet books. Nothing sinister. It's a nod to the original dolls and books, which is what they are trying to do.

Addys book is also so great and meaningful because she started there and had to be brave and escape to a better life. What kind of story would it be if it was instead. “Addy always lived in this great town and had no problems!”
