American Girl Doll News

Despite today being the list date for Lila's new book, and the new items being in stores, there were no new items added to the American Girl online shop today. However, if they aren't going to be added today, they will probably be added on Thursday. Why Thursday, you may ask? After Tuesday, Thursday is the most common day of the week for the American Girl store to be updated online, while Sunday is the most common day of the week for new items to be added to physical stores.

We didn't get a new Girl of the Year around New Year's, but we did get something just as cool today - Lila Goes for Gold, the hardcover novel based on Lila's story (and sequel to Lila's Journal - make sure you read the summary on my blog if you don't have the Lila doll before reading this one!) The novel isn't available on the AG website yet - it probably will in a few hours, considering it's only 7 am where American Girl's headquarters are located - but there is a 25-page sneak peek on Amazon, and the novel is available wherever books are sold. My dad's taking me to get the book after he gets home from work today, so expect my review later tonight!

Today is Melody's birthday. She was born this day in 1954, which makes her 70 today! P.S: Happy 2024!

AGDN readerSeeko visited the American Girl store today and spotted some new Truly Me items! These are all pet-centered items, including a poodle - the Tropical Taffy Poodle - and pet themed pajamas, as well as a pet-themed robe and slippers set.

The new year is tomorrow - and this will be the last AGDN post of 2023! The 10th anniversary of this site is in just 5 days, and 10 years ago today, I went to an American Girl store for the first time. I'm so grateful that this site has been a part of my life for over half my life, and I cannot wait to keep running it for years to come! Anyways, onto the post! For New Year's Eve, I thought it would be fun if I did some predictions for 2024 in the American Girl world. The first thing I'm predicting is more graphic-style novels and books for American Girl dolls. Julie is getting a journal and a graphic novel mystery, so I can imagine that we will probably end up getting more for the other historical characters. Maybe some of the older mysteries will come back as graphic novels, as well as parts cut out of the abridged illustrated novels! American Girl does another collaboration with a new animated movie. The Trolls: Band Together line sold out within only a month or two, and the movie itself did better than expected, making nearly $100 million in the US alone. Animated movies coming out this year include Kung Fu Panda 4, Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4 and The Garfield Movie, as well as an untitled Disney movie. None seem like obvious fits with American Girl (except maybe Inside Out), but who knows, they might surprise us! The American Girl movie either gets cancelled or gets fast-tracked into production. I know this was only JUST announced, but days after the announcement that Paramount Pictures took over the movie, it was announced that Warner Brothers is in talks to purchase Paramount. If Warner Brothers buys Paramount, this could either mean one of two things - the movie gets cancelled (like what happened with the first iteration when Amazon bought MGM), or the movie's progress goes faster (after all, Warner Brothers's biggest movie of all time is now Barbie!) Either Kaya or Rebecca gets cubed. Both dolls have had noticeably smaller collections, with items selling out and less attention from American Girl marketing. However, since Kaya is American Girl's only Native American doll and Rebecca is American Girl's only fully Jewish doll currently available, they would make their choice silently. I think Rebecca is more likely because Isabel and Nicki are available, but that would mean that Isabel and Nicki would need some Hanukkah stuff to keep that representation in the historical line. 5. The Girl of the Year 2025, rumored to be named Summer McKinny, has a connection to space. In December 2025, the United States's Artemis 3 is scheduled to land on the moon, landing both the first woman astronaut and the first Black astronaut onto the moon. Luciana Vega, who would be seven years old in 2025, would not be remembered by the target audience, allowing American Girl to repeat the theme in honor of Artemis 3. If this is the case, there is a possibility Summer would be the second Black Girl of the Year and the first to have a unique design. What do you guys think? I hope you all have a happy New Year!

It's the last Thursday of the year. For the past three years in a row, the Girl of the Year has come out on this day to allow American Girl to have a slot on Good Morning America for the reveal. In 2020, Kira Bailey came out on December 31. In 2021, Corinne Tan came out on December 30. And in 2022, Kavi Sharma came out on December 29. And yet, here we are, in 2023, waiting for the new Girl of the Year to come out, only to remember - wait. Lila Monetti's already out! And she's been out for nearly three months! On one hand, this change has been proving to be beneficial for American Girl. Many of Lila's items, including the doll herself, are backordered already, and they seem to be selling well, from what I've heard from people with connections to American Girl. But at the same time, it just doesn't feel like winter break if you're not searching for Girl of the Year leaks, or constantly blogging. Even my sister told me the other day while we were baking Christmas cookies, "It's weird Sydney isn't constantly talking about the new Girl of the Year!", so I proceeded to infodump about Lila just to make it feel like winter break. When I went to the AG store yesterday, it was weird that there wasn't a huge space waiting for the new Girl of the Year to fill. The most familiar thing about the display was the stack of Truly Me dolls in place of the Lila dolls currently on backorder, to be honest. It reminded me of the days where Girl of the Years actually retired on December 31... but that's not the point of this post. The point is that somewhere in another universe where American Girl didn't start to release their Girls of the Year early, Lila would have released today. And without a huge, impending release, the Thursday before New Year's this year has been very - boring. But, turns out, I got sick today with a fever. So maybe it is a good thing that we're in the universe where Lila Monetti came out on October 4th.
